The Stop & Shop chain of supermarkets has a quaint history. In 1914 the Rabinowitz family opened a corner market to serve neighborhood customers in Somerville MA. They opened their second store in 1914 and continued to open new stores each year. By 1917, the chain had 15 stores.
Initially the stores sold only grocery items but soon after added meats, produce, milk, dairy, and some frozen foods. By 1921, they introduced a new concept to retailing: the self-service, modern supermarket. They were pioneers of the modern grocery store selling all types of food items under one roof. Today there are more than 275 Stop & Shop stores in New England, New York and New Jersey.
Shop & Stop chain was recognized in 2014 as “Retailer of the Year” by Progressive Grocer because of the “commitment to philanthropy in their local communities.”
The photos below show the glazed structure that was added to the Bristol CT Stop & Shop for the floral department. The sun highlights the floral arrangements and gift items within making it a bright spot in the store.
